Chicago Formatting Help
Basic format rules for Chicago and Turabian style papers
(based on The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed)
Chicago and Turabian use similar formats for preparing citations, footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography. Your instructor should specificy either Chicago or Turabian. Try this citation guide for an explanation and comparison of the styles.
1. Notes and bibliography: numbered footnotes or endnotes in your text, with Bibliography or Works Cited list at the end of the paper, listing alphabetically the sources in your notes.
- White, 8-1/2 by 11-inch paper
- One-inch margins
- On the title page, centered on the paper, include the name of your college, the full title of your paper, the course/class information, your name and date, and any other information that your professor may require.
- Page numbers go in the upper right corner, starting on the first page after the title page with page 2. The title page should not have any page number on it.
- Double-space throughout except block quotations, which are single spaced and indented four spaces from the left margin.
- Indent first word of each paragraph 5 spaces (one-half inch) from left margin.
- Single space the footnotes, endnotes, and the references, with a blank line
between entries.
