Citing Generative AI Use

APA Reference List Entry

  • Author: Name the company that developed the AI tool
  • Date: The date the content was generated
  • Title: The name of the AI tool in italics
  • AI Tool Version: The version or release date, not in italics
  • AI Tool Type: Add a descriptor in square brackets to explain what the tool is, such as [Large language model]
  • Tool URL: Provide the URL where the AI tool can be accessed

Format: Company name. (Year). AI Tool (Version or Release date) [AI Tool Type]. URL of AI tool.

Example: OpenAI. (2024). ChatGPT (Version 4.0) [Large language model]. https://openai.com/chatgpt

MLA Reference List Entry

  • Describe the prompt: Briefly describe the question or task you provided to the AI tool
  • Title of the AI tool: Name the AI tool used (e.g., ChatGPT)
  • AI Tool Version: Specify the version of the AI tool, including the version date if available
  • AI Company: Name the company that developed the AI tool (e.g., OpenAI)
  • Communication Date: The date the content was generated (similar to an access date)
  • Tool URL: Provide the general URL of the AI tool

Format: “Description of the prompt” prompt. AI Tool, version date, Publisher/Developer, date of content generation, URL of AI tool.

Example: “Describe the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.
