  • How to do keyword searches

  • How to find and evaluate existing research on ethnic studies concept

  • Why peer peer-reviewed sources/resources are so important right now

For your final project you will:

  1. Identify 2 Ethnic Studies concepts
  2. Create a physical zine that reflects their interpretation of 2 concepts
  3. Write a 1-2 page paper that explains how the zine represents their chosen concepts + explain concepts using at least 3 sources from MCC library. Honors contract students - 5 page research proposal.

Research with KARE

K = Generate Keywords

Let's generate keywords and search terms for major ethnic studies concepts. Use THIS GOOGLE DOC and fill in additional and related words, ideas, themes, concepts.

A.R.E. = Apply, Re-Search, Evaluate

To evaluate, answer questions like these:

  1. Who is/are the authors?
  2. What are their institutional affiliations?
  3. What credentials/degrees do they have that mark them as an authority to write on the topic?

Ethnic Studies Databases

A) Read through the list of MiraCosta Library's Ethnic Studies Databases

B) 5 - 7 mins. Pick ONE of the databases and explore it. Answer these questions, and be prepared to share with the class:

  1. Based on the focus of the database you chose, come up with a topic (event, theme) from class, social media, or the news that you or a classmate might find the database useful to do research on.
  2. Is there an Advanced Search option in the database? If so, what are some features in the Advanced Search that are not available in the basic (default) search?
  3. Is there anything else you noticed about the database that you'd like to share with the class?
