Step 1: Define Success & Choose a Characteristic

Define "Success" 

Before researching, reflect on YOUR definition of success. Success can mean different things to different people. Think about what it means to YOU:

  • Personal Success: Happiness, healthy relationships, personal growth
  • Professional Success: Career advancement, financial stability, work-life balance
  • Social Success: Helping others, contributing to community, making a positive impact

Choose ONE Human Characteristic

Personal Qualities

  • Resilience: Bouncing back from failure
  • Perseverance: Persistence despite obstacles
  • Curiosity: Desire to learn and explore
  • Empathy: Understanding others' perspectives
  • Adaptability: Flexibility in changing situations

Social & Professional Qualities

  • Leadership: Inspiring and guiding others
  • Communication: Expressing ideas clearly
  • Collaboration: Working well with others
  • Integrity: Honesty and strong values
  • Innovation: Creative problem-solving

Step 2: Brainstorm Keywords

Once you select your characteristic, think of synonyms (similar words) and related ideas to use in your search. This helps you find more sources because writers use different words.

Example: Empathy

  • Main Characteristic: Empathy
  • Synonyms: compassion, understanding, sensitivity
  • Success Outcomes: How can this trait help someone succeed? relationships, communication, teamwork
