Google's Advanced Search

Did you know Google has an Advanced Search? It's a great way to leverage some powerful search tools to get to better websites!  Pay particular attention to limiting to particular site domains (site:gov) and consider whether or not "phrase searching" with quotation marks would be beneficial.

Evaluating Websites - CRAAP Test

Evaluating websites is essential. One technique is to use the CRAAP test:

CURRENCY

  • When was the information published or posted? Has the information been revised or updated? Does your topic require current information?

RELEVANCE

  • Does the information relate to your topic/research question? Who is the intended audience? Have you looked at a variety of sources before selecting this one?

AUTHORITY

  • Who is the author/publisher/source/sponsor? What are the author's credentials/organizational affiliations? Is the author qualified to write on the topic?

ACCURACY

  • Where does the information come from; is it supported by evidence? Has the information been reviewed, edited, or refereed? Can you verify any of the information other sources? Is the language unbiased and free of emotion? Are there typos or spelling errors?

PURPOSE

  • What is the purpose of the information (inform, teach, sell, entertain, persuade)? Do the authors/sponsor make their intentions or purpose clear? Is the information fact, opinion or propaganda? Does the point of view appear objective and impartial? Are there political, ideological, cultural, religious, institutional or personal biases?

Use Google Advance Search to get to a useful website for this assignment. Use CRAAP to evaluate the website and tell me which criteria was most difficult to address. Be prepared to discuss your advanced search and the site you evaluated.
