Science in Context is a full-text science database that provides a variety of  information for all science-related research needs. Content includes reference, peer-reviewed and technical periodicals, news, and multimedia.

CountryWatch includes publications for each country including demographic, political, economic, business, cultural and environmental information.  There is also CountryWire, which provides daily news coverage for every country in the world. Platform provides e-journal access to Nature and the full archive of Scientific American online.

CultureGrams (online via ProQuest) is a reference database for exploring up-to-date cultural information from countries around the world (World Edition).  Additional modules explore the U.S. States and Canadian Provinces.

Articles & Journals

Periodicals are important sources of information in your research. Database Logo for National Geographic Virtual Library
JSTOR provides full-text access to articles from over 1400 scholarly journals in a diverse array of arts, humanities, and social sciences disciplines.  EBSCOhost provides access to several periodical databases. Academic Search Ultimate contains full text articles from mostly academic/scholarly journals. Masterfile Premier provides more general and popular periodicals.

ScienceDirect covers the life sciences, health sciences, engineering, physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

National Geographic Virtual Library includes full-text of the National Geographic magazine from 1888-present.

Books & eBooks

The MiraCosta College Library owns copies of over 200,000 books and ebooks! To locate books in print and ebooks, use the Library Catalog . If you wish to access the ebooks from off-campus, you will need to enter your SURF ID and password. Try the Databases by Subject list for additional reference, periodical, and ebook databases.

Reference & eBook databases provide background information and in-depth research on many research topics.  Popular databases include: Gale Virtual Reference Library; Oxford Reference Online; EBSCO eBooks; Britannica Online, and Springer eBooks.

Multimedia Sources

The MiraCosta College subscribes to several streaming video databases containing documentaries and educational videos. If accessing streaming databases from off-campus, you will be prompted for your SURF ID and password.

Films On Demand provides streaming educational videos on subject areas including Archival Films & Newsreels, Social Sciences, Business, Science, Health & Medicine and more. Academic Video Online is a multidisciplinary collection of streaming video with approximately 17,000 full-length videos in 22 disciplines.  Intelecom is a searchable video clip database covering a wide variety of disciplines. Topic-specific clips average 3 to 5 minutes in length and are closed-captioned.
