Info 5: Websites

Are Websites Reliable?

We sometimes believe that if information is presented in a nice package, it must be true. In reality though, when it comes to web content, anyone who has access to the Internet can publish information. These sources may not undergo the same quality review process as information published in books and subscription databases (a collection of magazine, newspaper, and journal articles). It's important to carefully evaluate the information you see on social media, websites, and developed through Artificial Intelligence.

Critical Thinking

Research is about curiosity and critical thinking! The more inquisitive you are about the information you find and sources you use, the more thorough your evaluation skills will become.

Click Restraint

Click Restraint keeps people from visiting less than good quality sources. This skill is useful both on Google as well as social media. Not every source deserves your attention.

Lateral Reading

Lateral Reading is a key fact checking skill. It requires leaving the source in question to investigate the source elsewhere. This help with questions about authority, accuracy, and bias.
