Advanced Search Techniques

  • “Quotes” keep words together; use for phrases or proper nouns ("climate change")
  • AND combines unlike words and searches all terms ("climate change" AND fashion)
  • OR finds either term; useful for synonyms ("slow fashion" or "carbon-neutral fashion")
  • The Advanced Search option in databases may make it easier to combine terms

  • Written by experts in a subject who share original research
  • Published in a scholarly journal

Characteristics:

  • Use technical language 
  • Use many in-text citations
  • Include lengthy references
  • Often include tables, charts, and graphs
  • Do not usually have advertisements
