Database Search Tips

Start Broad, Then Narrow

  • 1st search: "racial inequality"
  • 2nd search: "racial inequality" AND "job discrimination"

Use Phrase Searching

Put quotation marks around keywords to keep them together.

  • Example: "gender roles" AND patriarchy
  • Example: "feminist theory" AND "social norms"

Multiple Sources, Not One

  • No single source will cover all aspects of your topic. Each source provides pieces of a puzzle.

Use Author's Language

  • Search using terms experts use. Try keywords common in your field of research.

Constructing Keywords

Historical Context Examples

Be careful adding dates (1950s, 20th century) to your search.

  • segregation AND "economic opportunity"
  • "domestic violence" AND "women's rights"
  • patriarchy AND "gender inequality"
  • abuse AND "female empowerment"

Literary Theory Example

  • "feminist theory" AND "gender equality"
