Keywords/Search Terms

  • Try multiple searches--typing in different keywords (e.g. "traditional arts", "Kente Cloth", "African textiles")

  • Join multiple terms with "AND" & "OR" ("Visual symbols" AND Adinkra , "wood carvings" OR sculpture, "ancestral figures" OR deities)

  • Use quotation marks around a phrase to do phrase searching (e.g. "Yoruba thorn carvings" ; "clay sculptures"; "totem poles")

  • "Indian" (as well as Native American) is still used in the Library catalog and databases: "Indian art" is an acceptable search terms
