Keyword Tips

Start with the Biotech Color and Field

  • Use the "color" of biotechnology (e.g., Red, Green, White) as a starting point.
  • Examples:
    • "Green Biotechnology" AND agriculture
    • "White Biotechnology" AND industrial applications

Add the Specific Technology or Application

  • Combine the biotech color with specific technologies or focus areas.
  • Examples:
    • "Green Biotechnology" AND "genetically modified crops"
    • Biotechnology AND biofuels

Incorporate Benefits and Risks

  • Add terms related to benefits, risks, impact, or ethics
  • Examples:
    • "gene therapy" AND ethics
    • aquaculture AND "environmental impact"

Include a Local Focus

  • Search in our Newspaper databases or OneSearch. Combine terms like San Diego or California to find local biotech initiatives.
  • Example: biotech companies AND San Diego AND biofuel

Database Searching

  • Try "Phrase Searching" - Place quotation marks around keywords you want to keep together. Example - "genetically modified crops"
  • AND searches all terms - Example: "gene therapy" AND ethics
  • Spelling counts! Not seeing many results? Double-check your spelling.
  • You May Not Find Everything in One Place - It’s unlikely that a single source will cover all aspects of your topic. Instead, think of each source as providing pieces of a puzzle.
  • Think about how experts in the field phrase the concepts you're researching and try those words in your search.

Keyword searching is not an exact science and you may need to experiment with different combinations to get the best results.
